He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, from the 15th to the 18th legislature, and since 27 March 2018 he has been a member of the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party.
Since 17 April 2019, he has been Deputy Secretary of the Democratic Party.
From 22 February 2014 to 1 June 2018, he was Minister of Justice in the Renzi and Gentiloni Silveri Governments.
Previously, from 28 April 2013 to 22 February 2014, he was Minister of Environment and Land and Sea Protection in the Letta Government.
Currently, he is a member of the VIII Parliamentary Commission “Environment, Territory and Public Works” and of the Parliamentary Delegation to the Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Since 2006, the Chamber of Deputies has also been a member of the V Parliamentary Commission “Budget, Treasury and Planning” and the Parliamentary Committee of inquiry on the phenomenon of mafias and other criminal associations, including foreign.
